Tummy tuck surgery
The
best candidates for the tummy tuck procedure are women after multiply
pregnancies or basically wo
men
who lost significant amount of weight
and were left with excess of skin and fat tissue in the abdominal area
which do not respond to diet or exercises.
Tummy tuck (abdominoplasty)
can also reduce scars after other surgeries in the abdominal area (for
example caesarian, C-sections etc.) and partly reduce stretch marks.
Tummy tuck may be performed as a full abdominoplasty or as a mini tummy
tuck. If necessary during the same procedure liposuction can be
performed.
Full tummy tuck involves works in the area of mid and lower stomach
together with tightening up the abdominal wall and also navel
replacement. So the scar runs from hip to hip – the incision
is made in the area of pubic bone. Whereas in case of mini tummy tuck
the incision is shorter (similar to caeserian) and the navel may not be
replaced (also recovery time is shorter) – basically mini
abdominoplasty is less invasive. In general scar after tummy tuck can
be easily covered by underwear.
Abdominoplasty
is a major and serious
procedure. Like each surgery it
carries risks but in comparison with other cosmetic surgeries
abdominoplasty carries higher risk of complications and longer length
of recovery. All pros and cons of the surgery should be discussed by
plastic surgeon with a patient.
The
surgery is performed in general
anaesthesia, after which a patient
is left with drains (after 1-3 days the drains are removed) and a
special elastic dressing / garment to wear permanently for 6 weeks.
For the first few days abdomen will probably be swollen and bruised, a
patient feels some pain and discomfort which can be controlled by
painkillers. But it will take a while until a patient will feel like
herself again. For sure recovery is quicker for those patients
who were in good shape / exercised their body before the surgery.
Basically exercise help to heal better and reduce swelling and also
lower the chance of blood clot. Depending on patient condition, length
of stay in the clinic should take at least about 3-5 nights after the
surgery. Elastic garment should be worn during first 6 weeks non stop.
In a clinic you will get instructions how to treat the incision during
first few weeks. Stitches should be removed after 14 days. About a week
after removal of stitches, it is a good idea to start treating the
incision with ointments that help the scar to flatten out and lighten
in color. A patient should be prepared to take care of a new tummy. For
example: during first 3 weeks after the operation a patient cannot do
any heavy works, even vacuuming; during 3 months after the surgery
sauna, solarium, sunbathing is forbidden, smokers should
limit smoking before and after the surgery.
Tummy tuck produces excellent results and in most cases, the results
are long lasting.
